Part of it is that if you weren't brought up with jazz as a primary musical influence, it can be very difficult to see where the hell Jaco was coming from as a musician, because much of jazz was about breaking norms and standard traditions.
Some beautiful writing and composing on his part. I think no where is this more apparent in those 3 songs. He did have a fantastic musical sense, but there were times his ego got the better of him (and what great musician hasn't). They are some of the best big band tunes I've heard, and his bass playing, while prominent, is ABSOLUTELY NO WHERE NEAR as flashy as anything he's ever done, despite it being so late into his career (hell, liberty city was one of the first songs I learned when I got a fretless).
